Gearbox and Drive Train

Designed from the ground up, uninhibited by existing designs the X4-2SP offers reliability, power and dependability.

Manufactured from heat-treated EN36, the whopping 216mm main gear and uprated brake shaft have both size and material strength in their favour. We based our design of this critical section on existing winches but increased the dimensions with the goal of achieving a strength of twice that of comparable race winches.

The huge puling power of 4 motors can be fully harnessed in any situation thanks to two-gear ratio selections at the flick of a switch. A low ratio of 37:1 for when you require a high pulling force, and a high ratio of 22:1 when the winch load is lower to deliver speeds of up to 120m/min, enabling you to winch and drive without wheel spin. All gears are supported by bearings rather than bushes for maximum efficiency. 

Mechanical Brake

When placed under load the torque-sensitive anti-reverse mechanical brake automatically prevents the winch releasing rope backwards, without relying on separate pneumatic systems or driver control. Wet brake friction materials are used for better heat dissipation and reduced wear. 

Free Spool 

The spring engaged, pneumatic activated free spool disconnects the drum from the drive train for near frictionless line release. The spring return ensures any potential pneumatic failure leaves the winch in the safe/locked position.

Cases

All of this is packaged within a pair of CNC machined billet aluminium 6061 T6 cases, with a dovetailed groove with o-ring sealing the cases together. 

To prevent water and contaminant ingress, the drum shaft passes through a twin lipped oil seal before being supported by a large ball bearing to deal with the immense loads seen at the drum.

Drum

The fully machined drum has a unique rope retention system to ensure zero slip, and generous rope capacity for longer pulls. 

Available in 320 and 283 widths that align with common mounting configurations.
